We have not completed their interviews, exports or checkouts, so the descriptions below are the providers' stated formats, not hands-on ratings. Confirm availability, trial limits and the selected plan before committing.

For any option, ask to see an example, try correcting a name or date, and check the export and sharing controls with the actual storyteller. A product page cannot establish how well that workflow will suit your family.

What Storyworth still does well

Storyworth suits a storyteller who enjoys a steady weekly rhythm and a printed book at the end of the year. Every plan includes weekly questions, written answers, phone Story Calls and a hardcover, including Basic. Color adds a full-color book and a monthly Family Call; Unlimited also adds weekly guided phone interviews. This phone-feature detail was checked in Storyworth’s own help article on October 27, 2026. If that rhythm already works for your family, switching mostly changes how the stories are told, not whether they get told.

Reasons to compare other formats include: weekly written answers start to feel like homework, the storyteller would rather have a conversation, the family wants something to read before the year is over, or the author wants more say in how the finished text reads.

If your storyteller would rather talk than type

Remento is built around spoken answers. A prompt arrives by text or email, the storyteller records from any device, and Speech-to-Story produces either a lightly cleaned transcript or a polished narrative in first or third person. The hardcover links each chapter to the original recording with a QR code, and the archive stays available after the subscription ends.

StoryKeeper accepts writing, dictation, audio and video for a hardcover book. On October 29, its US homepage showed a $99 offer, while the Plus FAQ listed $129 for two copies and phone-call recording. A separate banner advertised 20% off; we have not verified its eligibility or final checkout amount. There is no subscription or creation deadline. Confirm the selected plan and copy count before buying.

Life Story AI sends one question a week from an AI biographer and accepts voice or text in seven languages. A relative can run the app for a parent in its interviewer mode. The $49 plan is digital only; the $99 and $199 plans include printed books.

Heritage Whisper concentrates on speaking and sharing quickly: an AI interviewer asks the questions, and new stories appear for family as soon as they are saved. It does not include a printed book.

Memoirji runs inside WhatsApp, so there is no new account to set up. It is a low-effort way to find out whether a conversational format suits your storyteller before paying for anything.

StoriedLife adds a digital conversation option. Its Digital gift lists $59 for one year of conversations with an AI biographer and a PDF book. The public gift form leaves $89-a-year renewal unchecked and says nothing renews unless you select it. Buying for yourself differs: the form lists $59 for the first year, then automatic renewal at $89 a year. Its FAQ says stories can be edited; after cancellation they remain viewable but cannot be added to or edited. Checked October 26, 2026: gift form, self-purchase form and FAQ. Its no-card trial has conflicting published limits: three stories in the pricing section and seven days in the FAQs. Check which applies before starting. We have not completed a purchase, tested its voice workflow or checked an exported PDF. For any digital-only choice, try correcting a name or date and saving a file you can open outside the service before committing to a longer project.

If phone calls are easiest

Storii schedules three life-story prompt phone calls a week, and the storyteller can also call in whenever they like. Calls are recorded, transcribed and rewritten into biographical text, and the family can download an audiobook and an eBook. Plans are monthly or yearly, and a gift box covers twelve months of calls.

Tell Mel uses an AI interviewer that phones on a schedule and adapts its follow-up questions to each answer. Plans are sold by interview hours rather than by book, and the stories go to a private website rather than a printed volume.

StoryKeeper Plus also includes a phone-call service. For a storyteller who avoids screens, ask each company how calls are scheduled, how long they last, and who can listen to the recordings afterward.

If you want to review every chapter before anyone reads it

MemoirWell works differently from weekly-question services. The author, or a relative helping them, starts a guided conversation about one memory and answers by speaking or typing. MemoirWell drafts a chapter in the author's own words, then keeps it as a draft until the author has checked the facts it relies on, looked at a family-safe version for private details, made any edits and approved it. The author can choose to share a downloaded copy of their book with relatives.

That review suits people who care more about accuracy and control than about a weekly rhythm. The trade-offs are real: MemoirWell runs in a web browser rather than over the phone, and its gift includes PDF or EPUB export rather than a printed copy or shipping. The first chapter is free and needs no card, which is enough to judge whether the drafts sound like the storyteller. See MemoirWell pricing.

What arrives on gift day, and when does the year start?

A gift email, an activation code and a finished book are different things. Most gift conditions in this section were checked against the providers' own guidance on October 12, 2026; StoriedLife's redemption and Family Circle terms were checked on October 26. The separate price-check dates above still apply. MemoirWell publishes this comparison, and its own limits are included below.

Storyworth: schedule the invitation; order the book later

You can choose the gift-email date at purchase or print a gift card. The hardcover is not sent automatically: the storyteller needs to prepare and order it. Check the selected plan's start date at checkout rather than assuming an unopened gift email pauses the year. After a Basic or Color year, Storyworth allows time to edit existing stories and asks you to order the book within three months or renew to write more. Remento: decide who will manage the project

With a hosted gift, you choose prompts and manage the project; Remento sends the welcome email on your chosen date. Its subscription guidance says this gift year begins on that delivery date. With its separate gift-card option, Remento emails the recipient redemption instructions so they can set up the project themselves. Decide whether they want you to organise the storytelling or would prefer to do the setup themselves. Remento's two gift options.

Without renewal, existing stories and recordings remain available to read, play and download, and books can still be ordered. Recording new stories and editing existing ones require an active subscription. Remento's start-date and renewal guidance.

StoriedLife: check Family Circle after redemption

Its gift and sharing terms say the recipient creates or links an account to redeem a gift. Section 7 says the gift sender may be automatically added to the recipient's Family Circle on redemption, with both people notified. The recipient controls which stories are shared, can mark stories private and revoke family access. Check the actual sharing list together before the first story; buying access and agreeing to read someone's writing are separate decisions.

Storii: hand over a code for phone-call storytelling

The gift box or digital voucher gives the recipient an activation code; the voucher comes to you to print or forward. Storii says the twelve-month gift period begins when the code is activated. Its separate, buyer-managed subscription connects you to the recipient's account, so choose that route only if shared access is wanted. Storii's gift options and activation FAQ.

When the subscription ends, calls stop, but the stories remain available in a free, read-only account and can still be exported. Storii's access-after-cancellation guidance.

MemoirWell: personally share a private activation link

The gift year costs $149 once. Buy in your account, then share the link yourself when you are ready to give it. The recipient needs their own account without an active writing plan; their year starts on activation, with no automatic renewal or card required from them. Buying the gift gives you no access to their writing. They can choose to share a downloaded copy of their book. Printing and shipping are not included. MemoirWell gift terms.

Save PDF or EPUB copies during the active year. Files already downloaded remain yours; new book exports require active writing access, or archive storage for a book already finished and approved. The gift does not include permanent online book-export access. See writing plans.

Before you buy a family-story gift

• Let them choose the format. Ask whether they prefer writing, recording alone or a conversation. MemoirWell's free first chapter can help you try its format together before buying.
• Agree on who can read. Helping pay for a memoir does not mean the storyteller wants to share every memory. Compare the buyer's role with the recipient's privacy controls.
• Plan for a start, not a finished book on the holiday. Writing, review, production and shipping each take time. An immediate gift email is not a book-delivery promise; MemoirWell gives no guaranteed completion date.

LifeBook Memoirs is a managed service rather than an app: face-to-face interviews, a handpicked ghostwriter, a project manager, photo restoration and a set of hardback books. Packages cost $18,000, $27,000 or $42,000, so it suits families who want professionals to carry the whole project from first interview to delivery.

Questions to ask before you choose

1. How does the storyteller like to talk? Writing, recording, a phone call, or a conversation with someone in the room.
2. Is a printed book essential, and by when? Some services include a hardcover; others are digital or charge for printing separately.
3. Who decides the final words? Check whether AI rewrites the answers, whether the storyteller approves the text, and whether the original recording is kept.
4. What happens after the first year? Compare renewal prices and whether you keep access to everything if you stop paying.
5. Can the family take part? Look at invitations, contributor roles and who can read what.
6. Can you take everything with you? Recordings, transcripts, photos and the finished text should all be exportable.
