A free worksheet for the stories behind your things

Family heirloom inventory you can fill in and print.

A familiar bowl. A quilt. A handwritten recipe. Record what the object is, who kept it and the memory you want to keep with it.

Up to 20 items · Your own words · Text download · Blank or filled browser printing · No account

Getting the worksheet ready…

Your entries stay in this page's memory. They are not autosaved: refreshing or closing clears them. Download text or print before leaving. This worksheet records your notes; it does not appraise objects or verify their history.

Keep a record of one item

Start with one entry and add up to twenty. Describe the object, keep its family connection and note where the story came from.

Item 1

A short name you can recognize, or your own catalog number.

Describe the material, color, size or marks that distinguish this object.

Keep an estimate or an unknown date in your own words.

Who had it, and how did it come to your family? Separate remembered and documented details.

A scene, a familiar use, a saying or a detail you want someone else to remember.

Who told you, when you asked, and any letter, receipt or record reference. Leave uncertainty visible.

Use a useful label such as Box A or a photo filename. Include only what you want in your saved copy.

Someone to ask, a detail to photograph or a source to check.

Family heirloom inventory

Keep the object, its story and the source of each detail together. An uncertain detail can stay uncertain.

Next question or step

Start with one object you recognize

Give it a short name or reference. Describe a mark or detail that would help someone identify it. Keep its family connection, a remembered scene and the source of each detail beside that description. You can write around 1960, according to Jo, or not known without turning a guess into a fact.

The Family Tree Magazine inventory and history form is intended to record heirloom origins. Modern Heirloom Books' guide to preserving heirloom stories recommends keeping an object's provenance, description and personal associations. The fields here are an original MemoirWell worksheet.

A small example, not a real family record

Item: Blue serving bowl, Box A. Memory: Jo remembers Sunday lunches around 1960. Family connection: said to have been a wedding gift; the date is not confirmed. Source: an invented conversation note. Photo reference: bowl-01.jpg. Next step: ask which wedding and check the note before adding a date.

Before you save your inventory

Is this a free printable family heirloom inventory template?

Yes. Start with one item and add up to twenty. Type descriptions, family connections, memories, sources and references. An entirely empty inventory prints one blank worksheet with handwriting lines. Filled copies include written items and skip untouched entries.

Can I include photographs or get an appraisal?

You can note a photo filename or reference and keep the photograph with your saved worksheet separately. This page does not upload photos, estimate an object's value, check its history or decide who owns it. It organizes the notes you type.

Where are my notes saved?

Only in this page's memory. They are not uploaded or autosaved, and refreshing or closing clears them. Download text or print before leaving. Include only the keeper or storage details you want in the copy you share.

How do I save a PDF or continue later?

Print or save PDF opens your browser's print dialog. Choose Letter or A4 and check the preview. Browser-menu printing works while editing too. Each item starts on a new page; long notes may use more pages. Download text saves a TXT copy. The tool cannot reopen that TXT as an editable inventory.

Does the object bring a scene to mind?

Keep your inventory first. MemoirWell's separate guided interview can help you develop your own memory into an AI-assisted draft chapter to check and edit. Your inventory is not transferred automatically.
