Choose words people have a chance to know
A hometown, a favorite food, a game you played or a shared holiday can work better than an obscure family fact. Ask before including someone’s name. Mix shorter and longer answers, let relatives work in pairs, and give a spoken hint when someone needs one.
MyPartyGames’ family reunion word scramble describes distributing printed puzzles and checking them with a separate answer key; timing a round is optional. MakeWordScramble’s family reunion puzzle also pairs a printable puzzle with an answer key and offers Letter and A4 formats. Their word lists, designs and downloadable files are not copied here.
How to play
Give each player or pair a sheet and a pencil. Ask them to rearrange each set of letters into a word or name. Choose a relaxed round, or agree on a time limit before starting. Check together with the host key; another sensible word may use the same letters, so agree which alternatives count.
An invented family example
Rosa might include St. Louis, O’Neill and PANCAKE for a gathering. Players see rearranged A–Z letters; the host key keeps St. Louis and O’Neill and shows STLOUIS and ONEILL to explain the conversion. After PANCAKE, someone might tell a story about a weekend breakfast. Rosa and this gathering are fictional.
Before you make copies
Can I print a free family reunion word scramble with my own answers?
Yes. Replace the list with up to twenty answers, one per line, and choose Make puzzle. Each answer needs two to twenty A–Z letters after conversion. The twelve starters are also ready to print. The tool does not require an account, payment or AI generation.
What happens to accents, spaces and punctuation?
The puzzle uses capital A–Z letters. Spaces, periods, apostrophes and hyphens are removed; convertible accents are reduced to A–Z. The host key keeps your spelling and adds the converted answer when needed. Unsupported letters, numbers and answers outside the limit show an explanation; your full entered text stays in the editor.
Can two answers use the same letters?
The list rejects duplicate answers and pairs with identical letters after conversion, such as LISTEN and SILENT. It also rejects an answer made of one repeated letter, which cannot be meaningfully mixed. A generated set always uses exactly the answer’s letters and differs from its original order. This does not make the answer unique in the language; hosts can accept other sensible solutions.
Can the answer key end up on the player sheet?
The default copy is the player sheet: scrambled letters and writing lines, without the answer list. Choose Host key explicitly in Review for the answers and original spelling. Back to editing, a new mix, field edits and Undo return to the player copy. The text downloads have separate filenames. Check the selected copy and one printed sheet before making the set.
What if I change the list or clear the puzzle?
A title edit keeps the same mixed letters. Editing answers withholds the old puzzle until you choose Make puzzle again. A player download never includes the answer draft; choose Host key in Review to save the full draft as text. Clear asks before removing the title, answers and arrangements. Undo restores them exactly until a new field edit, another mix or leaving the page. Clear also gives a twelve-row blank worksheet.
Does it fit on one Letter or A4 page?
The ordinary starter sheet and key are designed for one page. A long title, long original spellings or twenty full-length answers may need more pages. Check print preview before making copies. Each answer has one writing line; you can use the blank worksheet to write a larger or simpler game by hand.
Are our words saved or uploaded?
Your words and mixed letters stay in this page’s memory, without upload or autosave. Refreshing or closing restores the starters. Print or download before leaving. Only the host TXT keeps the complete answer list as entered, including spaces and line breaks; it cannot be reopened as an editable puzzle here. Nothing is transferred to another tool automatically.
Did an answer remind someone of a scene?
Save the puzzle first. If a relative wants to tell more, MemoirWell’s separate guided interview can help turn a memory into an AI-assisted chapter draft to check and edit. Puzzle words are not copied into that interview.
