Make a word search for your gathering

A short title fits best on one sheet. 0 characters.

Use up to 20 words, one per line, with 2–20 letters each. Spaces, apostrophes, hyphens and convertible accents are removed in the grid; the word list keeps your spelling. Use A–Z spellings for other letters. 12 of 20 words.

Changing words or directions needs a new puzzle. Changing only the title keeps the same letter arrangement.

Make the puzzle feel like your gathering

Try a family surname, a hometown, a favorite recipe, a place you visited or something someone taught you. Ask the people whose names you use if they are comfortable sharing them. Start with a short list so everyone has time to finish.

Reunly’s family reunion word search uses a themed letter grid as an activity for guests. Discovery Education’s Puzzlemaker also lets people make a printable word search from their own list. The starter words and arrangements here are prepared for MemoirWell; neither publisher’s grid or word list is copied.

Choose directions before making copies

Across and down uses words from left to right or top to bottom. The other option includes diagonals and backwards words. Check the names and one printed copy before preparing the whole set; random letters are checked against a short English list in all eight directions. A sequence inside one entered word is kept. A sequence formed by crossing different words triggers another bounded placement attempt; other unintended words are still possible. Keep the answer key separate from the sheets you hand out.

An invented example

Rosa’s family might use O’Neill, San José and BACKYARD. O’Neill appears as ONEILL in the grid and San José as SANJOSE; the word list keeps the spellings. After finding BACKYARD, someone might ask, “What did you like doing outside when you were little?” This is a fictional example, not a record about a real family.

Before you print the puzzle

Can I make a free family reunion word search with our own names?

Yes. Put up to twenty different words or names in the list, one per line, and choose Make puzzle. Each needs two to twenty letters after conversion. The twelve starter words also make a ready-to-print puzzle. No account, purchase or AI generation is involved.

How do spaces, punctuation and accents work?

The grid uses A–Z capital letters. Spaces, apostrophes and hyphens are removed; convertible accents are reduced to A–Z. The word list shows your spelling and adds the grid spelling when needed. Numbers, unsupported letters, repeated grid spellings and words outside the limit show an explanation. They are not silently removed. Enter an A–Z spelling for a letter that does not convert.

Will every word fit, and can the same word appear more than once?

The generator tries a bounded number of arrangements and checks that every entered word is present before showing a new puzzle. A difficult list may need another try or a shorter word; the full draft stays in the editor. Words may overlap, and random letters can create extra occurrences. The key marks one valid location per word in the directions you chose. A short English list screens all eight directions. Random letters can be replaced; an unwanted crossing between different entered words needs another placement. A sequence inside one entered word, such as ASS in CLASS, is kept. The tool makes up to thirty-two placement attempts and preserves the full draft if none passes. This is not an exhaustive language check; review one copy before handing it out.

What happens when I edit words after making a puzzle?

Change only the title to keep the same arrangement. Changing the list or directions needs Make puzzle again; the old grid is withheld from Review, printing and TXT until it matches. Download text can still save your full draft. Clear asks before removing all fields and the arrangement; Undo restores the exact words and grid until another field edit, arrangement or page close.

Do the players receive the answer key?

The default copy is the player sheet, with the letter grid and word list. In Review, choose Answer key to show marked letters and row-and-column locations. Back to editing, a new arrangement and Undo return to the player copy. Print player sheet in the editor always uses that copy. The two text downloads have different filenames.

Does it fit on Letter or A4, and is there a blank worksheet?

Ordinary puzzles and keys are designed for one sheet, with a grid that can grow up to twenty-eight letters across and down. A long title or word list can need more pages, so check print preview. Clear the puzzle for a fifteen-by-fifteen handwriting grid and eight lines for words. With an edited list that has not been generated, browser printing shows the draft list instead of an outdated grid.

Are our family words saved or sent anywhere?

The words and arrangement stay in this page’s memory, without upload or autosave. Refreshing or closing restores the starters. Download text or print before leaving. TXT keeps the word list exactly as entered, including spaces and line breaks, and includes a matching grid when one is ready; it cannot be reopened as an editable puzzle here. Nothing is transferred to another tool automatically.

Did one word bring back a scene?

Save the puzzle first. If someone wants to tell more, MemoirWell’s separate guided interview can help turn a memory into an AI-assisted chapter draft to check and edit. The puzzle words are not copied into it.
